Counterflows 2022
31 March - 3 April
Counterflows Festival 2022 emerged from the darkness of the last couple of years, refreshed and excited by the idea of live music. There were so many blistering sets this year, including [Ahmed]’s set at the Glue Factory, which was recorded and released under the title ‘Wood Blues’. We also welcomed new commissioned work Tom Mudd & The Gorbals Youth Brass Band, Brìghde Chaimbeul & Vasco Alves, Hannan Jones & Shamica Ruddock, and more.

The Friday evening of Counterflows dives in with two mischievous acts that challenge and subvert any standardised notion of what consists of a ‘band’. Kyoto’s Mountain: Full Edition (Misako Yabuuchi, Kentaro Imai and Kiuchi Hitomi) open the evening, presenting their deliciously odd cross-disciplinary work together in Europe for the 1st time. “Like an ever transforming […]

In Conversation: Petronn Sphene and Sunik Kim
Petronn Sphene and Sunik Kim both performed amazing sets at Counterflows 2022, spilling their overflowing, amorphous sounds off the Glue Factory walls on the Friday and Saturday nights of the festival. After performing, they met for the first time and found they both had a rapport and equal fascination with each others work. We decided […]
Edward George on Kuduro – Episode 3: Kuduro International
Kuduro is the electronic dance music of a generation born and raised during Angola’s traumatic and protracted civil war. It started life on Angola’s margins, in the clubs and ghettos of the nation’s capital, Luanda, before being co-opted by the government to become the official sound of post-war Angola. In this the final episode, Edward […]

Kuduro is the electronic dance music of a generation born and raised during Angola’s traumatic and protracted civil war. It started life on Angola’s margins, in the clubs and ghettos of the nation’s capital, Luanda, before being co-opted by the government to become the state sanctioned sound of post-war Angola. In this second episode, broadcaster […]
Park Jiha and Roy Claire Potter in conversation — ‘Emotion in the commons’
South Korean musician Park Jiha joined English artist and writer Roy Claire Potter for an improvised collaboration for Counterflows 2022. They were initially brought together by BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction in 2020, where they met in Maida Vale for the first time. Despite the language barrier the combination worked seamlessly, with Roy editing together […]
[Ahmed] and the legacy of Ahmed Abdul-Malik
The writer and broadcaster Edward George explores the multiple resonances, versions and iterations of the jazz ensemble [Ahmed] and the inspiration behind them, Ahmed Abdul-Malik. In what was an experimental take on the live ‘in conversation’, Edward took to the stage at Glasgow’s community central halls to develop his theory around the strangeness of jazz […]
