Hafez Modirzadeh
Hafez Modirzadeh’s Grammy-nominated work is global in scope, highly collaborative in nature, with a shared company extending across generations, from Ornette Coleman to Tyshawn Sorey, and Zakir Hussein to Vijay Iyer, as well as many of the original AACM members. As a Pi Recordings artist and Professor of Creative Music at SF State University, Modirzadeh’s artistic scholarship encompasses innovative concepts such as chromodality, aural archetypes, and compost music, while his most recently acclaimed “Facets” (PI 87) takes explorations in resonance towards “an entirely new mode of expression” (Chicago Reader), with “a feeling of rich uncertainty” (New York Times) that serves as a “blueprint for pancultural parity” (Downbeat).
