The Gorbals Youth Brass Band
The Gorbals Youth Brass Band (GYBB) provides a secure learning environment for children to explore their creativity through free and inclusive high quality instrumental music education. Founded in 2012 by two graduates of The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, GYBB delivers lessons and group rehearsals to young people from the Gorbals area of Glasgow, ranked in the most deprived decile on the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. Prior to the establishment of the project, there was no local authority provision of instrumental music tuition in any of the primary schools situated in the local area. Participation is fully inclusive and GYBB aims to remove all barriers to the development of members playing abilities, aspiration and potential, and directly engages young people with protected characteristics as the sole outcome of the project. Through significant learning experiences and opportunities, young people gain transferable skills which leads to greater aspiration, increased confidence, pride and self-belief. Over the years the band have taken part in numerous events across Scotland and beyond including The Scottish Festival of Brass, “Wake Me Up”, the official BBC Children in Need Single 2014, Tectonics Festival and European Music Conference.
