“A” Trio + Judith Hamann
Celebrating their 20th anniversary together, we welcome “A” Trio, Lebanon’s oldest free improvisation group, to the UK for first time. Having moved away from their jazz roots towards a more textural approach, they rely strongly on prepared & extended techniques for a heavy diversion of their respective instruments of trumpet, acoustic guitar and double bass. After working together in trio and various other contexts for many years, Mazen Kerbaj, Sharif Sehnaoui and Raed Yassin reached a characteristic sound that has been fondly described as “textural swing.”
Opening the event will be a solo set by Australian cellist, Judith Hamann, a highly active and creative figure in the worlds of new music, electroacoustic composition, improvisation and more. In their recent research, Hamann examines the acts of shaking and humming as formal and intimate encounters; interrogates ‘collapse’ as a generative imaginary surface; and considers the ‘de-mastering’ of bodies, both human and non-human.
