Project

Thanh Cảnh (Sound & Landscape)

At the start of this year we partnered with Hanoi based organisation Lên Ngàn to deliver an exciting new project titled Thanh Cảnh (Sound & Landscape). Thanh Cảnh brought together artists from Scotland and Vietnam to explore sound’s relationship to land, language and tradition.

As part of a two phase project in Vietnam, we invited musicians Sholto Dobie,Trần Hoài Anh, Ly Mí Cường, Long Ngoc Minh, Inge Thomson and Nguyễn Trung Bảo to spend time together in the Ha Giang mountains, visiting the friends and family of Ly Mí Cường. Cường is part of the Hmong community and together the group were welcomed by local musicians and instrument makers, learning through improvisation, instrument making and recording.

Over a two week period in June the artists and producers led a range of interdisciplinary activities in Hanoi, Đồng Văn and Ha Giang including fieldwork, workshops, symposiums and an openlab.

In the following months the artists worked on new material that was premiered in Hanoi in September 2023.

We are absolutely delighted to share a small selection of this material with you via our website and hope you get a sense of the incredible work and friendships made.
