Lina Lapelyte’s Candy Shop

Candy Shop is an ongoing and evolving work that encompasses a song, a conversation, an intervention, a provocation, an audition, and a dance class. Originally known as a popular rap hit by 50 Cent, Candy Shop – The Circus is a performance reworking the games of power that are embedded in rap songs into lullabies, narrating a story about beauty, gender and the mundane. This performance is an opera featuring seven women performers, a male choir, a woman drummer, a combination of hip-hop texts, electronics and video that invites for a collective meditation on power hierarchies.
