Annea Lockwood / Nate Wooley: ‘Becoming Air’ + Lin Chiwei with Uzganc Choir: “All Sentient Being Sounds” + Garazi Navas + Rufus Isabel Elliot & Kings Park Brass

The curtain falls on the festival with four performances, welcoming work from Taiwan, the USA, The Basque Country and Scotland.

Skye-based artist Rufus Isabel Elliot will open the event, presenting a short new work commission for the festival. The piece will be performed by Kings Park Youth Brass, a brass band organisation based in the Southside of Glasgow.

Travelling from the Basque Country, Garazi Navas will treat us to one of her stunning solo sets. Exploring the instruments’ sonic and physical paramaters, Garazi proposes a unique approach with the accordion, melding together elements from Basque folk music, classical music and experimental music.

Taiwan’s Lin Chi-Wei returns to Counterflows after performing back in 2015. This time he will be working with Glasgow’s Uzganc Choir to perform “All Sentient Being Sounds”, a new piece that cultivates an organically evolving texture in which sounds converge, shimmer, circulate, and engage in dialogue. The piece’s spatiality is articulated both through the movement of 24 distinct sound positions and through the synthesis of spatial vocal fragments into cohesive sonic continuities—situating the listener within a liminal auditory zone between industrial and natural sound worlds.

Rounding off the festival will be a performance of Annea Lockwood’s ‘Becoming Air’ (2018), a piece developed with and performed by trumpeter Nate Wooley. Motivated by a desire for ‘the letting go of sound to be itself’, ‘Becoming Air’ unfolds as a series of texturally distinct moments separated by pauses, each fixing on a particular approach to the instrument and maintaining it in an essentially static fashion, focussing our attention on subtle changes and variations.
