Mariam Rezaei

Mariam Rezaei (she/her) is a multi-award-winning composer and performer. Her work is at the intersection of hip-hop and new experimental turntable practices combined with a grounding in new music aesthetics and philosophy. Her music has recently been described as “genuinely ground-breaking” (LCMF 2022, London Jazz News) and “high-velocity sonic surrealism” (LCMF 2022, 4* The Guardian).  Her newest work includes turntable quartet for soloist, “This World Which Is Made Of Women” (BBC Radio 3/New Music Show commission 2022) and free jazz turntable requiem SADTITZZZ (LCMF 2022). Based in Newcastle, he previously led experimental arts project TOPH, TUSK FRINGE and TUSK NORTH, and is Artistic Director of TUSK Festival, based in Newcastle and Gateshead (tuskmusic.org).

Part discussion, part listening party, they will explore the work they made together, their different approaches to their instrument and various sites of inspiration.

Pioneers of New Turntablism, Maria Chavez, Evicshen (aka Victoria Chen) and Mariam Rezaei come together to compose and perform as a trio this April. Co-commissioned by Counterflows festival in Glasgow and Rewire in The Hague, the project represents the first time three female turntablists of colour have come together in this way.
