Ankna Arockiam / Tom Mudd / Nakul Krishnamurthy
Following an exploration of the decolonial politics and possibilities of sound along the intersections of electronic, Western Classical, and Indian Classical musics at the 2024 edition of Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art, artists Ankna Arockiam, Nakul Krishnamurthy, and Tom Mudd collaborate for a new performance for Counterflows 2025.
The work explores the embodied knowledges of Carnatic music to deconstruct conventional modalities of performance and distil microscopic movements and expressions that are intrinsic to the tradition. These fundamental elements of musical thought interact with the expansive possibilities afforded by electronic music and digital sound synthesis to emerge in new forms mediated by the compositional and performance techniques of experimental, Indian Classical, and Western Classical musical imaginaries. Developing along cultural boundaries, the work aims to create new sites of decolonial politics in music where alternative sonic infrastructures are erected that challenge both regional and global hegemonic structures.
