SSW & Counterflows Residency Series 1 – AIR

AIR with Sholto Dobie

A collaborative residency series devised in partnership between Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) and AC Projects.

Scottish Sculpture Workshop and Counterflows festival have come together to create a unique artist residency programme that champions DIY cultures, improvisation and practices that break disciplinary boundaries.

This residency aims to provide both time, space and support for artists to develop new work within SSW’s remote rural context as well as opportunity to share this work through Counterflows festival in Glasgow. Beyond this both organisations will support the wider sharing of the selected artists practice through their networks across Europe and beyond.

2018 is the pilot year for this programme and over this time both organisations will work with selected artist Sholto Dobie to support the development of his work and practice and for his process to inform how the residency is shaped and held.

Sholto will work on new material in both the studio and workshop at SSW as well as the surrounding environment, using loose structures and an array of instruments including home-made organs and reed-pipes, recorded sound and anything else that comes to hand.

Throughout the past year he has assembled a number of ‘organs without bodies’. These travelling instruments are crudely assembled from materials such as cane-reeds, whistles, bin bags, fans and air compressors. In performances, they take on an absurd appearance – the roughly assembled materials giving the instruments a combination of naive, fairytale-like and brutal character.

He will use the residency to explore the potential of these constructions in exploring sound, place and environment.

Sholto will open up his work in progress and connected research at the Lumsden Weekender in November.
