Way back then… when record shops ruled (not that they don’t now of course!) Into our store dropped an amazing image on an amazing sleeve. It was red with a photograph of what looked like a large family sitting in front of a very simple wall of a building. The archways had points that indicated something different was going on. Ali Farka Toure was the artist and the music that was on this record changed everything for me. When I first heard Noura Mint Seymali’s 2014 Lp Tzenni I thought this is what we need to be putting on at Counterflows. The energy and richness to the voice and instrumental lines to me is totally where music begins. Of course Noura is from Mauritania not Mali but there is a lineage to this music of the griot that extends outward ignoring post-colonial lines on maps.
