It is a common misconception of the way we lead our lives that we are meant to aspire to this or that way of doing things. In 2004 I was ruminating in the audience at an evening of Instal when on to the stage stepped a be-hatted gentleman who proceeded to wack beautifully at his guitar accompanied by our very own Richard Youngs and Alex Neilson. It was of course, as history readily assist us with information, the entity known as Jandek. There is something of the Pynchon like allure to the personality that refuses to reveal itself about Jandek. Pynchon publishes books. Jandek makes music and even now since that 2004 revelation performs in front of audiences. But it is only his music that is revealed. Why do we insist in knowing who makes the music we listen to? Enough! It is just great to have a performance of Jandek with his original live band at Counterflows this year. I for one admire the commitment to music that Jandek represents. I think a Leveson report would help us know less about the people that make our music and just listen.
